## General

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="What is Strix?">
    Strix is an open-source autonomous AI security testing platform that acts like real hackers. It runs your code dynamically, finds vulnerabilities, and validates them through actual proof-of-concepts.

    Unlike traditional static analysis tools, Strix:

    * Executes real attacks to validate findings
    * Uses LLM-powered agents that think like security researchers
    * Provides comprehensive reports with reproduction steps
    * Can automatically generate fixes for discovered vulnerabilities
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How is Strix different from traditional security scanners?">
    Traditional scanners rely on pattern matching and static analysis, leading to high false positive rates. Strix uses autonomous AI agents that:

    * **Think contextually** - Understand your application's logic and architecture
    * **Validate findings** - Prove vulnerabilities exist with working exploits
    * **Adapt dynamically** - Learn from responses and adjust testing strategies
    * **Test comprehensively** - Cover business logic, not just known vulnerability patterns
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What types of vulnerabilities can Strix detect?">
    Strix can identify and validate a wide range of security issues:

    * **Access Control** - IDOR, privilege escalation, authorization bypass
    * **Injection** - SQL, NoSQL, command injection, XSS
    * **Server-Side** - SSRF, XXE, deserialization, path traversal
    * **Authentication** - JWT vulnerabilities, session management flaws
    * **Business Logic** - Race conditions, workflow manipulation
    * **Infrastructure** - Misconfigurations, exposed services, subdomain takeover

    See the [Skills documentation](/skills/vulnerabilities) for details on vulnerability types.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Is Strix free to use?">
    Yes! Strix is open-source under the Apache 2.0 License. You can:

    * Use it freely for personal and commercial projects

</AccordionGroup>

## Usage

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="What targets can Strix test?">
    Strix can test multiple target types:

    * **Local codebases** - `strix --target ./app-directory`
    * **GitHub repositories** - `strix --target https://github.com/org/repo`
    * **Live web applications** - `strix --target https://your-app.com`
    * **APIs** - `strix --target https://api.your-app.com`
    * **Multiple targets** - `strix -t ./code -t https://app.com`

    You can also provide authentication credentials and custom instructions for authenticated testing.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How do I run authenticated testing?">
    Provide credentials via the `--instruction` flag:

    ```bash theme={null}
    # Basic authentication
    strix --target https://app.com \
      --instruction "Login with username: admin, password: test123"
    # API key authentication
    strix --target https://api.app.com \
      --instruction "Use API key: sk_test_123 in Authorization header"
    # OAuth/JWT tokens
    strix --target https://app.com \
      --instruction "Use JWT token: eyJhbGc... in Bearer authentication"
    # From file
    strix --target https://app.com \
      --instruction-file ./credentials.md
    ```

    See [Custom Instructions](/usage/custom-instructions) for more examples.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How long does a typical scan take?">
    Scan duration depends on:

    * **Target complexity** - Simple apps: 10-30 minutes, Complex apps: 1-3 hours
    * **Scan mode** - Quick (\~10 min), Standard (\~30 min), Deep (1-3 hours)
    * **Target size** - Number of endpoints, pages, and features
    * **LLM speed** - Faster models complete quicker

    Use `--scan-mode quick` for faster results:

    ```bash theme={null}
    strix --target https://app.com --scan-mode quick
    ```
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I integrate Strix into CI/CD?">
    Yes! Strix works great in CI/CD pipelines:

    ```yaml theme={null}
    name: Security Scan
    on: [pull_request]
    jobs:
      security:
        runs-on: ubuntu-latest
        steps:
          - uses: actions/checkout@v6
          - name: Install Strix
            run: curl -sSL https://strix.ai/install | bash
          - name: Run Security Scan
            env:
              STRIX_LLM: ${{ secrets.STRIX_LLM }}
              LLM_API_KEY: ${{ secrets.LLM_API_KEY }}
            run: strix -n -t ./ --scan-mode quick
    ```

    Use the `-n/--non-interactive` flag for headless mode. The scan exits with a non-zero code when vulnerabilities are found.

    See [CI/CD Integration](/integrations/ci-cd) for more examples.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Where are scan results saved?">
    Results are saved in `strix_runs/<run-name>/`:

    * **findings.json** - Machine-readable vulnerability data
    * **report.html** - Human-readable HTML report
    * **report.md** - Markdown report
    * **logs/** - Detailed execution logs

    You can specify a custom output directory:

    ```bash theme={null}
    strix --target https://app.com --output-dir ./my-scan-results
    ```
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How do I customize what Strix tests?">
    Use the `--instruction` flag to guide testing:

    ```bash theme={null}
    # Focus on specific vulnerabilities
    strix --target https://app.com \
      --instruction "Focus on IDOR and privilege escalation"
    # Test specific features
    strix --target https://app.com \
      --instruction "Test the payment processing and checkout flow"
    # Exclude areas from testing
    strix --target https://app.com \
      --instruction "Do not test /admin or /internal endpoints"
    # Complex instructions from file
    strix --target https://app.com \
      --instruction-file ./test-plan.md
    ```
  </Accordion>
</AccordionGroup>

## Cost & Performance

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="How much do LLM API calls cost?">
    Costs vary by provider and model:

    * **Quick scan** - $0.50 - $2.00
    * **Standard scan** - $2.00 - $8.00
    * **Deep scan** - $5.00 - $20.00

    Factors affecting cost:

    * Model choice (GPT-5 costs more than GPT-4o)
    * Target complexity (more endpoints = more calls)
    * Scan mode (deep scans use more tokens)

    Use [Strix Router](https://models.strix.ai) for \$10 free credit to get started.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I use local models to reduce costs?">
    Yes! Use Ollama or LM Studio for free local inference:

    ```bash theme={null}
    # With Ollama
    export STRIX_LLM="ollama/llama3.3:70b"
    export LLM_API_BASE="http://localhost:11434"
    # With LM Studio
    export STRIX_LLM="openai/local-model"
    export LLM_API_BASE="http://localhost:1234/v1"
    ```

    Note: Local models may be slower and less capable than cloud models like GPT-5 or Claude Sonnet 4.6.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How can I optimize performance?">
    Several strategies improve scan speed:

    1. **Use faster models** - GPT-5 and Claude Sonnet 4.6 are optimized
    2. **Choose appropriate scan mode** - Use `quick` for CI/CD
    3. **Narrow scope** - Provide specific testing instructions
    4. **Use prompt caching** - Enabled by default for supported models
    5. **Adequate resources** - Ensure sufficient RAM and CPU

    ```bash theme={null}
    # Fast scan for CI/CD
    strix -n --target ./ --scan-mode quick
    # Focused testing
    strix --target https://app.com \
      --instruction "Only test authentication and authorization"
    ```
  </Accordion>
</AccordionGroup>

## Security & Ethics

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Is it legal to use Strix?">
    You must only test applications you own or have explicit permission to test. Unauthorized security testing is illegal in most jurisdictions.

    **Legal use:**

    * Your own applications and infrastructure
    * Client applications with written authorization
    * Bug bounty programs (following their rules)
    * Authorized penetration testing engagements

    **Illegal use:**

    * Testing third-party applications without permission
    * Scanning public websites without authorization
    * Any unauthorized access attempts

    See [Responsible Use](/resources/responsible-use) for detailed guidelines.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What data does Strix send to LLM providers?">
    Strix sends to LLM providers:

    * Code snippets and file contents (when testing codebases)
    * HTTP requests and responses (when testing web apps)
    * Error messages and application output
    * Testing instructions and findings

    **Not sent:**

    * Your LLM API keys (stored locally only)
    * Scan configuration files
    * Complete databases or file systems

    For sensitive applications, use:

    * Local models (Ollama, LM Studio)
    * Azure OpenAI with private endpoints
    * AWS Bedrock with your own infrastructure
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Does Strix store my data?">
    Strix stores data locally:

    * **Scan results** - Saved in `strix_runs/` directory
    * **Configuration** - Saved in `~/.strix/cli-config.json`
    * **Docker containers** - Cleaned up automatically after scans

    Strix does not send telemetry or analytics data to external servers. All data remains on your system.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can Strix damage my application?">
    Strix is designed to be safe, but security testing carries inherent risks:

    **Safety measures:**

    * Tests run in isolated Docker containers
    * Read-only by default for code analysis
    * Avoids destructive operations

    **Potential risks:**

    * Resource exhaustion from intensive testing
    * Triggering rate limits or abuse detection
    * Inadvertent data modification in live systems

    **Best practices:**

    * Test in staging/development environments first
    * Use read-only database replicas when possible
    * Monitor resource usage during scans
    * Review findings before applying autofixes
